Starc's Heroics Lead to Super Over in IPL Clash
New Delhi [India] - On April 17, during an exhilarating match between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Mitchell Starc's exceptional performance in the final over propelled the game into its first super over of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Reflecting on his pivotal last over, Starc emphasized the significance of executing his plan effectively and acknowledged the role of luck in the outcome. He noted the surprising batting order chosen by RR for the super over and expressed pride in his team's ability to meet the target, even after a no-ball incident.
“In the final over, I just trusted my execution and ran in with a clear strategy. Sometimes, it works out, and a bit of luck can make a difference. It was an incredible match, and I’m glad we came out on top. I’ve played long enough for everyone to know my approach, but if I execute well, I’m confident I can succeed. The choice of left-handers for the Super Over caught me off guard, especially with my bowling angle. I miscalculated a no-ball, but we had enough batting strength to chase it down,” Starc shared during the post-match interview.
Starc also praised the team's dynamic, highlighting the blend of youthful talent and seasoned players. He commended Axar Patel's leadership, Kuldeep Yadav's contributions, and the experience brought by Stubbs and KL Rahul.
“The atmosphere in the team is great, with a solid mix of youth and experience. Axar is doing a fantastic job leading us. Kuldeep has been outstanding, and both Stubbs and KL bring a wealth of experience. We’re enjoying ourselves, and success certainly boosts morale,” he added.
In a nail-biting finish, RR needed nine runs in the last over, but Starc's exceptional bowling limited them to just eight runs, leading to the super over. In that super over, RR set a target of 12 runs after scoring 11. KL Rahul and Trishan Stubbs took to the crease for DC, with Sandeep Sharma bowling for RR. The duo successfully chased down the target in just four balls.
Starc concluded the match with figures of 1/36 and was honored as the Player of the Match for his remarkable bowling performance during the death overs and the super over.
